Solar Oven in action
Solar Gadgets Malta
Xemx.eu was first started as a blog about cleantech and to present two revolutionary projects. Living in Malta has taught the signed author one thing. Nowhere else can one enjoy the sun like in Malta, as Valletta is the sunniest capital city in Europe.
On average, the small islands enjoy over 3,000 hours of sunshine yearly! Compare this to London, where sun shines only 1,461 hours on average. This incredible feature creates unique potential for solar power despite the small size. Thus is the name of the site fitting as xemx means sun in Maltese.
The first project harness the energy of the sun in a familiar manner but with new technology. Worldwide the usage of vacuum tubes for water heating has gained good momentum, as it is proven technology and highly efficient system all year round in Southern Europe. However, why to limit the heating power to water?
Solar ovens are already in use in some sunny countries where other energy sources are scarce or too expensive. Heating or preparing food with sun has provided many people an efficient alternative to search and carry wood for burning. Needless to say, solar is pollution free and prevents many respitory and ocular problems when households are smoke free.
Cooking in Southern Europe is mainly done with electric or gas stoves. Especially in summer this task is wasting energy, as most people prefer keeping their living space cool inside. On the other hand, most of the time sun is shining outside and this energy is in most cases totally unutilized!
In most cases apartments, maisonettes, townhouses, penthouses and terraced houses have free, unutilized space 99 % of time for a small solar oven available in balconies, back-yards and roofs for harnessing the sun’s heating rays.
Not to mention the power consumption in the kitchen. On average, kitchen adds 25% for the electricity bill for an European household. Yearly this amount translates to hundreds of Euros in larger homes.
Here’s some details about the average:
Solar oven is a viable option
I bet you are familiar with the saying that it’s hot enough to fry eggs on the pavement. Well, this is quite accurate, but frying eggs is much more palatable if it’s done in clean kitchenware.
Well insulated Solar oven can reach 100º Celsius in summer, even without any reflective mirrors. This simply means that heating, cooking and all preparing of food can be done in solar oven.
- Boil eggs or potatoes? Check
- Cook fish or meat? Done
- Heat meals instead of microwave? Easily
- Boil water for tea or coffee? Yep
- About anything you can think of preparing given enough sunshine hours.
In summer food cooks relatively fast and in winter the power can be boosted with a simple mirror.

Xemx.eu is much more
This site was not only built for Solar ovens, but to include all kinds of solar powered gadgets to make better use of the abundant light, reduce pollution and make a change by individual choice. For that reason Xemx.eu contains many solar products available for order.
This is simply great, because the clean-tech and green revolution has already started. By this I mean, that instead of expensive and elaborate photovoltaic or thermal systems there are ever growing number of user friendly simple devices that gets the juice from the sun.
Xemx.eu is dedicated to provide a catalog of available solar powered gadgets that you can start using right away and start saving energy.
Good reason for this is also the fact, that on average 47 % of energy is still generated by combustible fuels.
Another benefit is that being self-reliant when it comes to energy is more than convenient when power outages or other sudden unexpected events happen.
Solar chargers make possible to unplug the vampires from your power strip, as you can charge your phone with power banks. Solar car battery chargers make sure your car battery is always full of juice. With simple tools and DIY kits, you can hook up any solar panel to your hand-held electronics and give hours of more use.
One nice example is solar charged speakers or solar FM radio that plays trough the day without a wire or solar garden lights that light up automatically when it gets dark. New technology has made these systems powerful and reliable. Also motion detection solar lamps are a big hit, because they work even when the grid is down.
A night on the beach or in a tent has much more appeal to it when you have a nice solar camping lamp or solar lantern to make the setting atmospheric. In other instances emergency light powered by solar charger can be a real lifesaver. Fun idea for camping is the black solar shower bag that heats cold water and when hooked to a branch or bar can work as a mobile shower. Solar cooler stores the food fresh without draining your car battery. Portable solar battery can give you enough charge when your cellphone dies to make important call or post the last selfie from the beach.
Solar kit is a suitable tool for kids to learn about the solar energy. These solar toys, or educational solar kits, include solar car toys, like solar powered Lamborghini that are sometimes more fun to dads. As solar panels are much better in converting solar energy to electricity that 15 years ago, solar watches are reliable timepieces with their small solar panels keeping the charge for weeks without direct sunlight.
Save electricity with simple tips
While solar gadgets can help to reduce the bills and utilize better the wasted energy, much can be also done with the existing home appliances by simple modifications. Average C class fridge can spend 500 kW per year, so obviously changing to an A class appliance pays itself back in couple of years and usually they are much quieter. But even by taking the fridge two inches further away from the back wall increases the air circulation as makes the fridge more efficient.
Smart power strips or simple electrical timers can save you tens of Euros per year. Most appliances, while using little electricity when in sleep mode or in standby, still waste energy. You can cut these vampires by automation, for example by using plug-in timer to cut the power every night after 12 and turning it back on in the morning. TV’s, kitchen appliances, stereos and other items are not used during the night, so why keep them in standby and spend money? Efficient led bulbs, wireless solar keyboard and many other everyday items help you lower the bill.
With microwave you can heat up food fast, but as it stirs water molecules inside the food, it breaks down protein and lowers the nutritional value of food in the process. By heating food with hot solar oven, you use free energy and get more out of your food, making you healthier and happier.
